Grateful for Our Residents

IsabelCommunity! It is a wonderful concept…and if you think about it there are many ways to define what makes a community. Heritage Community of Kalamazoo (HCK) is a community unto itself and one of the important parts of living in a community like HCK is that you actually are part of an active community. You are not alone. One of the biggest issues facing many seniors, even those able to care for themselves is being alone…isolated and without the social connections or active friendships we all need.

For Isabel it was not an issue of being lonely so much as it was moving from her home in Pennsylvania to Kalamazoo. It was a tough decision for Isabel. Yet, with her son’s steady encouragement, concern and gentle coaxing, she decided to make the move to Kalamazoo. Isabel’s son was able to show her that living in Kalamazoo, in her own apartment, was the best decision for this time of her life.

Moving to Kalamazoo was one thing…where to live was another! Deciding to move was hard but after visiting and considering all the housing opportunities in the area, Isabel selected, along with her son’s advice, Heritage Community of Kalamazoo. There were many reasons for selecting HCK…she really liked her beautiful one-bedroom apartment and its convenient location. Another very positive aspect of moving to HCK was that she would be much closer to her son and his family and could be more involved in their activities and life. She had missed being able to see her son and his family and liked the idea of being closer. Isabel would have the opportunity to discover just how full and rich life in Kalamazoo can be both on a community wide basis and also within the “Community of HCK.” They also felt very comfortable with the Kalamazoo senior service staff at HCK and thought they were particularly helpful and provided a notable level of assistance during what could have been a very difficult move.

Isabel brought many of her treasured family antiques with her to make sure her Kalamazoo senior services apartment at Wyndham felt like home. She has created a very warm and inviting home indeed. She greatly enjoys sharing the history of each piece and its special meaning in her life. For Isabel, her antiques are like “scrapbooks,” each filled with meaningful moments and events of her past. She not only has her antiques, but also a real love for creative expression which comes out in her paintings, embroideries as well as her wonderful sense of decorating.

The independence of living at Wyndham Apartments affords Isabel the time to visit her family and enjoy our region’s many cultural and entertainment options. She also has more time to indulge in her own hobbies and interests. She is currently working on a beautiful embroidered quilt, which she admits will take her quite some time. But Isabel doesn’t mind that one bit…she is happy, content, and enjoying her new life.
